When to choose telehealth

When to choose telehealth

Explore the situations where telehealth can be a convenient care option, from routine checkups to managing your mental health and chronic conditions.

Telehealth changed the way you get health care. Instead of heading to a provider’s office, you can now talk with a medical professional on your phone, tablet or computer. With your Aetna plan you may have providers that offer telehealth services, so you can connect with them online. This makes it easier to get care from home if you’re not feeling well enough to travel.

Good care you can trust

Virtual care, also called telehealth or telemedicine, can be a fast and convenient alternative to in-person care. Can’t get to a provider’s office for a visit or need help after hours and on the weekends? Check with your provider or specialist to see if they offer virtual visits that meet your care needs. Or for information about your telehealth benefit, call us at the number on your member ID card.

Get care from the comfort of home

Aetna® members like you may be able to speak with your primary care provider (PCP) about hearing health through covered telehealth appointments. Find out if your PCP offers telehealth by calling their office or by visiting your secure member website.

When to use telehealth

Sometimes, seeing a health care provider online is the better choice. Here are a few examples of when telehealth is great option:

  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs): If you’ve had a UTI before and know the symptoms, a provider can prescribe medicine without an in-person visit.
  • Seasonal allergies or cold/flu symptoms: Telehealth providers can give advice or medicine to help you feel better fast.
  • Mental health: You can talk to a therapist or counselor online, which is helpful if you’re feeling stressed, anxious or sad.
  • Follow-ups: Telehealth is also great for follow-ups. For example, you can use telehealth after hearing tests, hearing aid fittings or check-ins about long-term health problems.

Other options: retail clinics

If you’d rather see a provider in person but don’t want to wait for an appointment, retail clinics are a great option. You can speak to a licensed health care professional within minutes. Clinics may be located in participating retail locations.

Whether you choose a video visit or a trip to a retail clinic, you’re in control of your health care.
