A tidy living space can have loads of great health benefits –– including easing allergy symptoms. Common allergens like pollen, dust mites and mold affect nearly 50 million Americans each year.* These triggers might cause watery eyes, an itchy nose and coughing. But allergies can sometimes cause serious health problems like trouble breathing, especially if you’re 65 or older. Luckily, there are ways you can manage symptoms. Use this guide to allergy-proof your home and breathe easier this spring.

1. Living room

  • Dust often: Use a damp cloth to trap dust instead of spreading it.
  • Choose easy-to-clean furniture: For fabric furniture, spot-clean stains with detergent and water, and vacuum regularly to keep it fresh.

2. Bedroom

  • Wash bedding weekly: Use hot water. It kills dust mites.
  • Close off the bedroom from pets: Pet dander can trigger allergies.

3. Bathroom

  • Wipe surfaces regularly: Use a cloth or sponge with baking soda or vinegar to clean counters, tiles and sinks.
  • Keep it dry: Open a window or run the fan after showers to reduce moisture. Doing so can prevent the growth of mold and dust mites.

4. Kitchen

  • Clean surfaces: Wipe counters with an all-purpose cleaner to remove food particles.
  • Check the fridge: Remove expired food to avoid mold growth.
