You can use secure websites or apps to look at your health records, make doctor appointments, refill prescriptions and more. These tools can be helpful, but it’s important to protect your personal information. Follow the tips below to help you keep your information safe.

1. Make strong passwords

Passwords are the first line of defense for your online accounts. They keep your information safe. When creating your passwords, remember:

  • Use a mix of upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols (for example, CoffeeRain71#Park!&)
  • Make it at least 8 to 12 characters long
  • Don’t use easy guesses others would know like your birthday, “password” or “123456”
  • Use a different password for each account and don’t share them with anyone expect a trusted loved one or caregiver

Tip: You can write them down in a safe place or use a password manager. This is an app that remembers all your passwords for you, so you don’t have to.

2. Keep your devices up to date

Your phone, tablet and computer need regular software updates. The updates fix problems that hackers can use to get into your accounts. Turn on automatic updates and use the latest web browser and email apps.

Updates may take a few minutes, but they help keep your information safe.

Get to know your secure member website

Your secure member website includes resources to help you understand your benefits so you can make the most of your plan. Log in anytime at AetnaMedicare.com/Login to manage your benefits, connect with care, check coverage and costs and more. Not registered yet? Start by visiting AetnaMedicare.com/Register

3. Use two-factor authentication

Two-factor authentication adds an extra step when you sign in to help keep your account safe. After you enter your password, you’ll get a code by text or email. Type in the code to finish signing in.

This extra step makes it much harder for someone else to get into your account — even if they know or guess your password.

Many health websites and apps have this feature. To set up, look for “security settings,” “two-step verification” or “two-factor authentication” in your account settings.

4. Be careful with requests for your personal information

Scammers will try to trick people into giving personal information like Social Security numbers, health plan ID numbers or passwords. Check the sender carefully.

  • Never give personal information in emails, texts or calls you weren’t expecting.
  • Check the sender carefully. Messages should come from your health plan’s website or phone number.
  • If you’re unsure, call your health plan directly using the number on your member ID card.

5. Set up account recovery options

Even if your password is strong, you might forget it. Or a site could lock you out of your account. You can set up password recovery options to help you get back in safely. Add a backup email or phone number in your account profile. And if possible, set security questions to help you remember. This step helps protect your information and keeps your accounts under your control.

Watch out for scams

Some messages may look real, but they’re designed to steal your information. This is called phishing. To stay safe:

  • Don’t click strange links or open attachments from people you don’t know.
  • Look for spelling mistakes or urgent messages that tell you to “act now.”
  • If a call or email seems suspicious, report it to your health plan.
  • Cell phone scams are also becoming more common, so be careful even if the caller seems official.

Access medical records safely

You have the right to see your medical records online.] Many health websites and apps let you see your test results and visit summaries. You can also share records and messages with your provider.

To stay safe:

  • Use only official websites or apps from your health plan or provider.
  • Avoid public Wi-Fi when logging in.
  • Keep your devices updated and secure.
