Living with a chronic condition doesn’t have to hold you back. Regular checkups help you stay healthy, independent and feeling your best.
Managing a chronic condition like chronic heart failure or diabetes takes ongoing care — and regular check-ins with your health care team are a big part of that. These yearly exams can help your providers track your progress, adjust treatments and spot potential issues early — before they turn into bigger problems.
Here are four key exams to keep your health on track all year long.
1. Annual Wellness Visit (AWV)
An annual checkup gives you time to talk with your primary care provider (PCP) about ways to stay healthy and injury-free. During this visit, you and your provider will talk about and update your personalized prevention plan — to help keep you healthy all year long.
During an annual wellness visit, your provider will review your medications and make sure you’re up to date on appropriate screenings such as colonoscopies or mammograms. They can also help you identify and plan for any vaccines you may need.
2. Vision exam
Yearly eye exams help keep your vision in good shape. Poor eyesight is a health hazard, putting you at risk for falls and other injuries. An eye doctor can update any prescription for glasses or contacts. They’ll also be on the lookout for eye issues like glaucoma (a condition that can cause blindness) or cataracts.
Regular eye exams are especially important if you have diabetes. That’s because diabetes increases your risk of eye conditions like diabetic retinopathy (when blood vessels in the retina are damaged) or diabetic macular edema (swelling in the retina’s central area). An eye care provider can even check for other health issues like high blood pressure.
3. Dental checkup
Regular trips to the dentist can help identify problems early, before they lead to more serious problems like cavities and gum disease. Oral health problems like these may also lead to other conditions, like heart disease.
Visiting your dentist twice a year can help you avoid these issues. Your Aetna® plan covers preventive dental services, such as routine dental exams, cleanings and dental X-rays.
4. Hearing exam
Straining to hear what friends and family members are saying? Loss of hearing can lead to falls, trouble focusing and feelings of isolation. It’s also a risk factor for dementia. Getting your ears checked every year is important for avoiding these problems.
